Case study: Halo 3 by Stephen Pittuck

Basic info: Halo 3 was released on September 25th 2007 and was named the best video game of 2007 in America. It is third in the series and has also halo games following this one.

Production:

Developer: Bungie

Publisher: Microsoft

How halo 3 was funded: Halo 3 would have been funded by the earlier successes of halo 1 and 2 and by Microsoft and Bungie.

What technologies were used for the Xbox 360 and why:

Marketing:

What strategy was used: They used a trailer that had the title believe, this trailer showed no in-game footage and no information about the game itself, they used model figures of both sides of (Spartans and Elites), they used the figures to show a war between the two sides and to at the end show master chief and then the words believe came up leading to the good prevailing over evil. The showed no information about it being halo until showing the master chief at the end and showing the name halo 3 at the end.

What sort of audience did they want to attract: They put the age range of the game at 16 so they were aiming at a mature audience. They were also looking for the same audience as both halo 1 and 2 as they knew they already had an audience there. They were mainly looking at a mature teenage audience, as they are the kids that this game will attract most due to all the shooting and the violence.

In the adverts, what aspects of the genre are they promoting: They are promoting the violence of the game so they are promoting the action genre through the war and the shooting of the adverts.

Viral marketing: Halo 3 has a facebook page where you can be become a fan and find out useful information on halo games that may be coming in the future.

Distribution:

How could you get hold of the game: You could go out to shops and get the physical copy of the game, you could go on an online shop and also buy the physical copy but you will get it through the post. Now there is on the Xbox 360 something called the Xbox marketplace where you can download old games instead of buying the physical copy you can download it.

How did you pay for it: I bought it in a shop buy exchanging it for money but you could also go to a shop and trade in an old game for another game.

Extra content: There is extra content for the game that you can download off the Xbox such as new weapons and new weapons that you can go online and play on.

Consumption:

Online: You could play online with other people around the world and also with your friends. You can go on a thing called forge where you can create your own maps and then put them on your file share so every one else can see and play your new map. You can also put screenshots of your gameplay and videos of you playing, and you can put them on the file share for everyone else can see. You get achievements and gamerscore for completing certain tasks that the game has set, this can also be seen by your friends and you can then gloat about having hard achievements that other people don't have.
